Social insurance and taxes

In Germany, all employees pay taxes and social insurance contributions to the State. We explain exceptions which apply to the IAESTE programme here.

Taxes are only paid in the event that the level of income exceeds the limit stated in the German Income Tax Act. As a rule, your income from an IAESTE placement falls below this limit. Further information can be obtained from the tax offices responsible for placement operation.

Social insurance contributions do not have to be paid for placements which are compulsory components of a degree course. Please contact the responsible social insurance agency for further information.
